208 Main St., Carbondale, Colorado. Shop: 970-963-5741;  Cell: 970-379-5672
We host guided float and wade trips on the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, Colorado and Crystal Rivers near Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs. Our local gold medal streams are among the most renowned in Colorado fly fishing.

OUR HISTORY:

Independent Flyfishing Guides began in May of 2005 simply as an outfitting service of experienced guides working year round without a shop.  Since the spring of 2006, we have mainly based our guiding operations out of  Crystal Fly Shop, in downtown Carbondale.  With the shop, we're not really "independent" guides anymore, but the spirit lives on--the spirit that every client is special and appreciated.

We encourage you to visit www.crystalflyshop.com, where you will find most of the info on this website, and which is maintained much more frequently.  We are beginning to phase this site out, but are reluctant to let it go entirely because of the rankings it continues to get.  Look for the current report page on the Crystal Fly Shop site now as well.

CRYSTAL FLY SHOP'S NEW LOCATION IS AT 208 MAIN ST. across from Russett's Restaurant, and there is also a new and improved ONLINE SHOP where you can always get great deals on quality gear and shop at home.

Our staff of local and Carbondale fly fishing guides is experienced, friendly and professional. We offer float services with both rafts and McKenzie drift boats, and have a full fleet of breathable waders, wading boots, and top rods to outfit you or your group on wade trips.  Unlike most shops, we will work with clients for whom price is an issue, especially during non-peak seasons when we are not heavily booked. We realize that teaching is as much a part of guiding as putting people onto fish, and we will help you to become a more independent flyfisher.

"The three days of fishing with you was great. Your expertise was matched only by your hospitality and friendliness. You considered our objectives, capabilities (as well as our limitations) and stream conditions to make sure our visit was a total pleasure.  It was also fun to learn some new techniques. Your manner of instructing is very comfortable and non-threatening. It doesn't hurt that you know how and  where to put your clients on some really big trout.  I will be recommending you and The Crystal Fly Shop to my fishing friends. Thanks again."  --Mike Donaldson and Cooper Adams

OUR PHILOSOPHY:

You can also be assured that we enjoy a world of fishing that is down to earth and free from attitude.  We are generous with our knowledge, and our main goal (along with helping people catch a bunch of fish) is to cultivate relationships with each of our customers and clients.  We're thankful for the friendships we have developed with many returning customers, and when you book or shop with us you are a person, not a number.  And you can also know that you are dealing with an owner that worked--not bought--their way into the business for a decade before becoming an outfitter and retailer.

Our clients are from all different backgrounds and skill levels--beginner to expert.  We're happy to accommodate special requests, and strive to exceed your expectations and give you the best time possible.  Most of our trips start from our Carbondale Fly Shop, but we can meet you at the river to maximize time, or we can arrange to pick you up if you lack transportation.  Our fishing reports are updated regularly so that you too can know what's happening on the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, Colorado, and Crystal Rivers.

Our guide roster for 2007 includes David Johnson, Ed Deison, Rodi Quitiquit, Clem Rinehart, Matt Russell, Ryan Davis, Wolf Scheiblberg, Patrick Murray, Merle Rodgers, and Paul Howe.

Just like a river, this website and Crystal Fly Shop's site are always evolving.  They were built by owner David Johnson, and are always being updated and maintained, so check back often!

WE'VE NEVER RAISED OUR PRICES.  For 2007, our prices are 10-15% less than the big shops in our valley, and 20-30% less than non-local guides from the Vail Valley who guide here.   You can get a local room and a guide here for the same price, and spend more time on the river instead of on the road to and from Vail/Silverthorne.
